DBQ Skills Flashcards
How would you get a point for a thesis?
Responds to the prompt with a historically defensible thesis/claim that establishes a line of reasoning
The thesis must make a specific claim that responds to the prompt, must consist of one more contiguous sentences, and must be clear and analytical.
DO NOT RESTATE THE PROMPT
How do you get a point for contextualization?
Describes a broader historical context relevant to the prompt
The response must situate the topic of the prompt to broader historical events, developments, or processes that occur before, during, or continue after the time frame of the question.
Context must be thoroughly detailed.
How do you get both points for evidence from the document?
To earn one point, the response must accurately describe – rather than simply quote – the context from at least 3 documents. To get 2 points, use 6 of the documents.
How do you get a point for using evidence beyond the documents?
Uses at least one additional piece of the specific historical evidence (beyond that found in the documents) relevant to an argument about the prompt
The response must describe the evidence and must use more than a phrase or reference. This additional piece of evidence must be different from the evidence used to get the point.
How do you get the point for analysis and reasoning?
Explain how (rather than simply identifying) the document’s HAPP is relevant to an argument about the prompt for each of the three documents sourced.
Always attempt at least 4 docs!
What does HAPP stand for?
Historical situation, audience, point of view, purpose
How do you get a point for the complexity and quality of the HAPP analysis?
Always make sure that you are using a HAPP that is RELEVANT to the prompt
