What is the goal of life according to De Beauvoir?
Transcendence: a constant becoming more aware and better.
What is the opposite of transcendence?
Immanence: being stuck in what is.
What exists in every human relationship?
a natural tendency to try and transcend at the other person’s expense (self v. other). People will exploit any advantage to achieve this.
What did the burden of reproduction lead to?
women dependency on men. they did the reproductive/immanent labor, and men transcended by risking their lives to master nature.
how did men capitalize on their early transcendence?
enshrining male supremacy and superiority in culture
Why is gender inequality both good and bad?
it helped create human culture and technology, which promotes transcendence, but it also condemned half of humanity to immanence
What has technology allowed us to do?
safely share the immanence and transcendence, so men and women can be equal.
how can women and men be both the self and the object?
if women get
- civil rights
- economic independence
- faith in their ability to transcend
