Modal Verbs!
Have to - don’t have to
Должен, используется для обозначения необходимости, требования или обязательства что либо сделать.
«I have to go to work, because I have to make money, because I have to eat food»
«Do you have to leave? What a pity!»
«You have to get a visa to go to Europe»
Modal Verbs!
Must - negative of must is DON’T
This is only used for very, very serious things. It is not a common word.
«You must stop now, or the
police will come!»

Should - Shouldn’t (Should not)
1) Rules (правило) that are not super serious:
«You should give your seat to older people on
the metro»
2) Advice (совет): It is a very common way to
give advice.
«You should see the Eiffel tower if
you go to Paris»
Shouldn’t (Should not)
The same as should, but negative.
1) Rules (правило) that are not super serious:
«You shouldn’t smoke cigarettes at the train
station»
2) Advice (совет):
«In Russia, you shouldn’t
whistle on the street»
«In Russia, you shouldn’t smile too much,
people will think you are crazy» - not, you should smile:)
Modal Verbs!
Can - Can’t (Can not)
To be abe to, is the same with Can
1) Ability (способность)
«I can speak English».
«I am able to speak English».
2) Permission (разрешение):
— «Teacher, can I go to the bathroom?»
— «Yes, you can».
May I? is that same, but a little old fashioned
(на старый лад).
— «Teacher, may I go to the bathroom?»
— «Yes, you may».
Can’t (Can not)
1) Ability (способность)
«I can’t speak English» or «I’m not able to speak».
2) Permission (разрешение):
— «Teacher, CAN I go to the bathroom?»
— «No, you can’t».
Also, the old-fashioned variant…
— «Teacher, may I go to the bathroom?»
— «No, you may not».
