What causes fetal alcohol syndrome?
When pregnant women drink alcohol
What does fetal alcohol syndrome cause?
Brain damage, growth problems, facial features changed, limb deformities, bad vision, bad hearing, small heads, brain size, heart defects, kidney problems, brittle bone syndrome, delay in learning, jitteriness, hyper-activeness, poor social skills, poor coordination, and moodiness.
Is there a “safe” level of alcohol that doesn’t cause fetal alcohol syndrome?
NO!!
What are some of the risk factors that make FAS more likely?
Increased doses of alcohol, being older than 30 years old w/ chronic alcohol consumption, binge consumption, genetic reduced alcohol metabolism, malnutrition, past FAS in another kid
Examples of facial morphology that happen w/ FAS:
small eye openings, skin folds at corner of eyes, ptosis (drooping eyelid), strabismus (eyes not aligned), small head, short nose, low nasal bridge, thin upper lip, small midface, small eyes
Examples of growth restriction that happen w/ FAS:
Fetal/Intrauterine that has short and long-term consequences
Examples of neurological restrictions and cognitive restrictions that happen w/ FAS:
small head causing a small brain, intellectual impairment, learning disabilities, ADHD in childhood, behavioral issues, seizures, and brain structure abnormalities
