Name the four basic principles that apply to international law.
- Sovereign states are legally equal.
- States assume legal obligations only by affirmatively agreeing to do so.
- An activity is allowed, unless specifically prohibited by law.
- Treaty obligations are generally suspended during armed conflict.
What are the two major sources of international law?
- International Agreements (Treaties)
- Customary International Law
What are the two requirements for an International Law?
- Must be signed by the President.
- Must be ratified by Congress.
What are the two requirements for a Customary Law?
- Must have State Practice
- Sense of Legal Obligation
What does Article 2 (4) of the UN Charter state?
Refrain from use of force.
What does Article 42 state?
UNSC may authorize use of force
What does Article 51 state?
Right of self-defense triggered by an “armed attack”.

General Assembly
What is the principal judicial organ of the UN?
International Court of Justice
