Imaginary east-west circles parallel to the Equator
LATITUDE
The unit of measure to determine absolute location on a map or globe
DEGREE

Imaginary north-south circles parallel to the Prime Meridian
LONGITUDE

Imaginary line that divides the globe into Eastern and Western Hemispheres
PRIME MERIDIAN
A person who studies the Earth
GEOGRAPHER
A round model of the Earth that shows the continents and oceans in their true shapes
GLOBE
A geographer who created a flat map in 1569 to help sailors navigate long journeys around the globe.
MERCATOR
A misrepresentation of the true shape or a change in the accuracy of a shape
DISTORTION
The size of an area on a map as compared with the area’s actual size
SCALE
A map feature that shows four cardinal directions
COMPASS ROSE
A representation of the Earth’s rounded surface on a flat piece of paper
PROJECTION
The section of the map that explains symbols for map features
KEY
One of the four compass points: north, south, east, and west
CARDINAL DIRECTION
Explains where a place is by describing places near it.
RELATIVE LOCATION
Describes the place’s exact position on the Earth.
ABSOLUTE LOCATION
Geographers study how people affect or shape physical characteristics of their natural surroundings and how their environment affects them
