Day 2 Flashcards
Definition of Octa?
Octa is a unit of measure to describe the cloud cover in a given location. 1 Octa = 1/8 of the sky in a given location covered in cloud.
Give the octa scale.
0: Sky clear (SKC)
1-2: Few (FEW)
3-4: Scattered (SCT)
5-7: Broken (BKN)
8: Overcast (OVC)
How to measure cloud base?
Always round down!
Below 5000ft in steps of 100ft
Above 5000ft in steps of 1000ft
Always 1st layer and the following layer of 3 or more Octa.
How to measure visibility?
Always round down!
Up to 5km in steps of 100m.
Beyond 5km in steps of 1000m.
Weather report: Suitable for low alt tactics?
Vis above 5000m + max 35knots wind
Ceiling above 1500ft and less than 3 Octa.
Weather report: Suitable for med/high alt tactics?
1-2 octa at 10000ft.
Weather report: unsuitable for med/high alt tactics?
8 octa below 5000ft.
3 categories of TGTacquisition?
- Visual
- NVD
- System aided
Types of system aided target acquisition?
- Laser
- EO/IR systems
- Radar
- INS/GPS
- HMCS
VDL systems contribute in:
- enhanced SA for JTAC + aircrew
- target verification
- friendly fire reduction
- real time BDA
What are the general weapon effects?
- Blast
- Incendiary
- fragmentation
- cratering
- Penetration
What is Danger Close?
A term used to inform GFC’s, FDC’s and aircrews of the proximity of the intended weapon impact point to the closest friendly forces. Someone is in danger close distance of a weapons impact point if the probability of incapacitation is 0.1% of higher.
What is RED?
Risk Estimate Distance: The distance described per ordnance when one is considered to be in a danger close situation.
How to mitigate DC?
- reposition own troops
- Use delay fuzing
- Different impact angles
- order troops to seek cover
Why FSCM’s?
- Safety own troops
- Effective employment fire support units
Give all FSCM’s
Permissive:
- FSCL
- CFL
- FFA
Restrictive:
- RFL
- RFA
- NFA
What is a FSCL?
A Line installed by the LCC or Amphibious component commander which denotes the need for deconfliction when engaging targets beyond this line.
What is CFL?
A line installed by a GFC (battalion and up) beyond this line GBFS can freely create effects without prior coordination.
What is a RFL?
A line between 2 converging units. No Fires or effects can cross this line without prior coordination between the GFC’s on each side of the RFL.
What is the purpose of Airspace control?
- Reduce risk of fratricide
- unity of effort
- increase the effectivity of air defense
What are the 2 methods of airspace control?
- Positive control: actively tracking and guiding the A/C.
- Procedural control: control based on prior made agreements.
What are the procedural control types?
- ROZ
- Coordinating Altitude
- Coordination level
- Airspace coordination area
What is a ROZ?
A restricted 3D block of airspace owned by the JTAC. He controls every asset entering the ROZ.
What is Coordinating altitude?
A set and given altitude where different airspace coordinating agencies each control one side.
What is a coordination level?
A set altitude where RW assets fly underneath and FW assets fly above.
What is a ACA?
A 3D block of airspace in which A/C are considered reasonably safe from friendly surface fires.
Give all informal airspace deconfliction methods.
- Lateral (Buffer=1km)
- Altitude (buffer=1000ft)
- Combination
- Time (TOT and TTT) (buffer: 30sec)
4 characteristics of a 3rd gen tgt pod
- CAT 1/2 capable
- North indicator
- IR camera
- LST LTD LRF
