Day 1: Introduction 10/17 Flashcards
When biopsies used
when lesion is > 1cm
polymorphic
suscpicious for malignancy
in an anatomical area with high morbidity
Excisional biopsies are used:
for smaller lesions (<1cm)
vascular lesions
pigmented lesions
removal of entire lesion and a perimeter of surrounding uninvolved tissue.
Torus Mandibularis
Always grows on the lingual surface of the mandible, near the bicuspid teeth. Buccal exostosis grows on the buccal surface of the mx and mn.
Impacsted teeth
One that fails to erupt into the dental arch within the expected time.
Adjacent teeth, dense bone, or excessive soft tissue prevents it from erupting
Most common teeth to become impacted?
Mn 3rd molars
mx 3rd molars
mx canines
Classification of impacted teeth
mesioangular (easy to extract)
horizonal
vertical-where its suppose to but not quite up there
distoangular (hardest to extract b/c in backed up into dense cortical bone)-angled distally
2 types of bone
cortical bone medullary bone (soft spongy bone teeth sit in)
Pell and Gregory Classification
Relationship to the Anterior Border of the Ramus
P & G Class I
normal position anterior to the ramus
P & G Class II
1/2 of the crown is within the ramus (most difficult
P & G Class A
tooth at the same plane as the other molars
Most difficult P & G is
Class 3C
Embedded teeth
Sometimes called impacted teeth
Inadequate arch length is the primary reason teeth fail to erupt
The most common teeth to become impacted are the? why?
third molars because they are the last to erupt
___ cortical bone has a higher implant success rate than ___.
Denser; loose, soft cancellous bone
