Day 1 Flashcards
Definition of the Intox EC/IR II
An approved instrument which analyzes a sample of deep lung air and reports results in milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.
Henry’s Law applied to breath testing.
At 34 C the deep lung air contains a concentration of alcohol proportional to the concentration of alcohol in the blood.
Average breath to blood ratio used.
2100 parts air. 1 part blood
Shallow blow
When a subject provides a breath sample that meets the minimum sample acceptance criteria, but is not a sample of deep lung air.
What is the margin of acceptability of Alcohol Standard results?
10% of the target value
EC means
IR means
Electrochemical
Infrared
Case fan
Cools the instrument
Pressure sensor tubing purpose
- Monitor the flow rate and volume.
2. Monitors ambient atmospheric pressure.
What radio frequency protection is in place
Faraday cage over circuit board
Metal case
RF detection
Sample acceptance criteria
- Minimum flow rate of 12L/min
- Minimum volume of 1.5 L
- 5% drop in flow rate after minimum volume is reached
Criteria for a Proper Breath Test
Two suitable breath samples within 20 MG% of each other.
Two diagnostic tests that have passed.
Two alcohol standard tests within 10% of the target value.
Alcohol standard simulator temperature.
33.8 C to 34.2 C
When is a quick test required?
After an equivocal refusal to confirm that instrument was working.
F2 function
5 logs
Personal log Instrument usage report Maintenance log Alcohol standard change log Breath test bulletin
Restart the observation period when:
The subject is not maintained in close proximity and in the field of view of the observer.
If the subject places anything in their mouth, burps, or vomits.
Why is the observation period conducted?
If something is present in the subjects mouth that contaminated the subjects breath, it could lead to a false high result.
How often is alcohol standard changed in a wet bath?
Every 2 weeks
Alcohol standard (dry gas) minimum psi and expire dates
50 psi
2 years from manufacturing date.
5 points to ensure wet bath is suitable for use
1 - two certificates of Analysts
2- placed in a simulator at a temp of 33.8 to 34.2
3- does not exceed 50 alcohol standard tests
4- use does not exceed 15 days in a simulator
5- use before the expiry date of the bottle
3 points to ensure dry gas is acceptable standard
1- two certificates of analysts
2- used at a cylinder pressure of 50 psi or more
3- used before the expiry date of the cylinder.
Pharmacology of alcohol definition
The effects of alcohol on the body as these relate to mental and physical function.
Impairment
Intoxication
Severe intoxication
Death
Levels
Impairment: less than 100 mg%
Intoxication: 100-250 mg%
Severe intoxication: 250-400 mg%
Death: 400 mg%
Four things that effect absorption:
Food in stomach.
Concentration of alcohol in beverage.
Rate of consumption.
Drugs, diseases and emotional states.
Rate of elimination.
10mg% to 20 mg%
Status: sim solution expires in X days.
Warns the QT that the Alcohol Standard solution in the simulator will expire in the number of days indicated
Quality control in Breath testing.
QC is the alcohol Standard Test.
