Day 1 Flashcards
Explain the Process of Assuring Separation
Assure separation through the process of assessing traffic, identifying conflicts, planning to ensure separation, executing the plan and monitoring the situation to ensure the standard is not infringed.
If situational factors show that we might lose our current form of separation, when must we establish another type of separation or minima?
Where the type of separation or minimum used to separate two aircraft cannot be maintained, establish another type of separation or another minimum prior to the time when the current separation minimum would be infringed.
True or False, Safety is secondary to the absolute requirement for expedition?
FALSE - Safety is paramount.
Expedition
Expedition is secondary to the absolute requirement for safety.
True or False, MARSA is a procedure whereby ATC initiates military flights to self-separate?
FALSE - MATS 5.1.8 MARSA
Do not initiate MARSA.
Military Authority Assumes Responsibility for Separation of Military Aircraft - (military pilots undertake self-separation where it would normally be the responsibility of ATC.)
Where it is possible that differing aircraft speed may compromise a separation standard, what shall controllers do?
10.1.3.4 Speed confirmation
Where differing aircraft speed may compromise a separation standard, obtain speed confirmation from the aircraft concerned.
10.1.3.4.1 Adjust speed
If required, apply speed control to ensure separation is maintained.
What are the four types of formation flight?
Close
Standard
In-Trail
Block (Tactical?)
Describe a Close Formation, and what the separation parameters are based on for other airspace users.
Aircraft within the formation are considered to be one aircraft
Separation with other airspace users is based on the lead aircraft
Describe a Standard Formation, and what the separation parameters are based on for other airspace users.
Aircraft may manoeuvre up to 1 NM either side of, co-altitude with, and up to 1 NM behind the lead aircraft.
Separation with other airspace users is based on the outer limits of the formation.
Describe an In-Trail Formation, and what the separation parameters are based on for other airspace users.
Elements within the trail maintain a nominated spacing from the element ahead
Separation with other airspace users is based on The first and last element in the trail
Note: In-trail and block formations may be established between any combination of elements comprising individual aircraft or smaller formations.
Describe a Block Formation, and what the separation parameters are based on for other airspace users.
A non-standard formation type that operates within a prearranged airspace block
Separation with other airspace users is based on the outer edges of the airspace block
Note: In-trail and block formations may be established between any combination of elements comprising individual aircraft or smaller formations.
What are the provisions and conditions utilised in applying emergency vertical separation?
10.1.6.1 Reduction of vertical standard
If during an emergency situation, such as radar failure, it is not possible to ensure that the applicable procedural separation minima will be maintained, you may temporarily use half the applicable vertical separation minima
Separate by: 500ft up to and including FL290 or in RVSM airspace
Separate by: 1000ft at or above FL290 in non-RVSM airspace
Issue Traffic information to affected aircraft.
What are the conditions of V1 - 500ft?
Apply 500 FT between IFR and VFR aircraft (including SVFR), or between SVFR aircraft where SVFR clearance is due to visibility, under the following conditions:
a) both aircraft are 7000 kg MTOW or less;
b) both aircraft are at or below 10 000 FT; and
c) traffic information is provided to the IFR aircraft, unless it is
impracticable.
What are the conditions in the application of V2 - 1000ft?
Apply 1000 FT to:
a) all aircraft, up to and including FL290; and
b) aircraft with RVSM approval except military formation aircraft, from FL290 to FL410 inclusive
State the provisions of V3 - 2000ft.
Apply 2000 FT:
a) in known standing wave conditions or severe turbulence at all levels;
b) from FL290 to FL410 inclusive:
i) when at least one aircraft is not RVSM approved;
ii) following pilot report of an inability to comply with RVSM due to
equipment failure;
iii) following an encounter with turbulence that affects the
capability to maintain flight level; or
iv) to military formation aircraft, regardless of the individual RVSM
approval state of each aircraft within the formation; and
c) above FL410 to all aircraft.
What vertical separation standard is required when an aircraft is operating in severe turbulence?
2000ft
V3 - Condition (a)
