Similarities to Thatcher
-priority was reduce budget deficit and he and the Chancellor (George Osborne) criticised the previous labour gov for irresponsible overspending, which they blamed for the financial crisis of 2008. Programme of public spending cuts- ‘austerity’ some gov department budgets cut by up to 25%.
-universal credit designed to cut costs +encourage those receiving benefits to be self-reliant and encourage people on low incomes to take up employment.
Differences to thatcher
-Cameron valued the NHS
-Cameron forming a coalition with Lib Dem’s following may 2010 general election shows he’s pragmatic and willing to compromise, Thatcher dominated her party and wasn’t fond of coalition-building.
-Thatcher had stressed individualism (she privatised state-owned industries e.g British Airways to encourage private ownership and competition), Cameron emphasise bonds between ppl & case for cooperation between state & voluntary sector in building ‘big society’.
