David Flashcards
sculpted by
Donatello
story of David
the heroic young shepherd boy who killed the giant Goliath comes from the Bible and was a favourite in Florence during the Renaissance
where did it stand
many years in the courtyard of the Palazzo Medici and probably symbolised that family’s struggles against its own powerful enemies
what was it made from
bronze
what was it the first of
large scale free standing nude rona since ancient roman times, most likely Donatello was commissioned by the Medici family yo create this
backlash
The bronze statue was controversial during the Renaissance and thereafter due to the sexual connotations some experts took note of, such as the wing from the giant’s helmet which rests along the length of David’s leg.
expressive
Donatello’s David is extremely realistic and a prime example of Renaissance naturalism. His body appears lithe as he stands with one foot atop Goliath’s decapitated head. His small frame and almost effeminate disposition imply that his victory is due to God’s assistance.
