dating Flashcards
archaeological anthropology
deals with origin and development of human species
- material manifestation in the form of material culture
prehistory
where we do not have any written records
protohistory
written present but can’t be interpreted eg Indus valley civilization.
history
written an understandable records
dating means
in archaeology means giving a chronological value to an event that occurred in the past.
relative dating
these methods help us to know the age of an entity (object) in comparison to the other. ➢ They may not give us an absolute value of the age.
absolute Dating
These dating methods/techniques are that determine the age of an object/entity in the calenderial years.
statigraphy
It is a study of the ‘Layered Deposits’.
Principle of Superposition
Principal of Association
The object lying below (say B) is older than Object lying above (say a) in the stratigraphic sequence/ layer.
river terraces
These terraces are remnants of former
floodplains or levels of the river.
exist at different elevations above the present-day floodplain, reflecting former positions of the river channel.
Principles: Rivers have the capacity of erosion and deposition. The relative erosion with respect to other terraces help us
in relative dating.
patination
chemical reactions resulting in different coloured coatings
palynology
stiduy of pollen grains
fluorine test dating
amount of fluorine deposited on the bone
pollen dating
The type of pollen found in any geological Stratum depends upon the kind of vegetation that existed at the time such stratum was deposited.
Thus, this method gives/helps us in determining relative age.
nitrogen dating
nitrogen content of bone decreases with time
