Data types Flashcards
What is qualitative data?
non-numerical data that is used in a relatively unstructured and open-ended way. It is descriptive, and subjective.
How could qualitative data be described?
- bias
- subjective
- change over time
- snapshot in time
- reliability
- perceptions
- intended audience
What are 2 possible limitations of qualitative data?
- could be biased, making the source not representative and perhaps
- can be easily manipulated, so not an accurate representation of the place
- intended audience could make data unreliable (untruthful)
Why might qualitative data be useful in showing sense of place?
- interviews provide opinions held by insiders, these cannot be obtained by quantitative data
- artistic expressions show the artists sense of place (however, only one person’s perspective may be a misrepresentation)
What is quantitative data?
Data that is numerical in nature, objective and easily represented in graphical form.
What are key words when talking about quantitative data?
Non-biased
Reliability
Averages
Patterns
Objective
Primary/ subjective
Line of best fit
What is geospatial data?
data that represents specific, located place information.
What are disadvantages of geospatial data?
- harsh boundaries
- not representative of the actual distribution
What should be considered when looking at the attitudes of a source?
- is it balanced?
How might the purpose of a source impact its reliability?
- for tourists: more positive portrayal, may not show all areas
- for residents: more negative perhaps? more honest?
