Data Standards and Governance Flashcards
Data standards
Data consistency is essential for everyday situations; correct petrol, correct battery types etc etc. It is important for organisations to document how they organise data.
Data stewardship
Data stewardship is the responsibility of groups who hold onto the data
Data governance
Data governance defines how an organisation collects, stores and uses data. It should comply with relevant laws
GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) - Data Protection Act 2018
The GDPR states:
You should aim to collect only the minimal amount of data needed
You only collect data that is relevant
You take steps to protect data and report breaches
You retain the data for the shortest time possible
Relevant people can request access to their data and can request their data is delete.
Data value and cost
Every piece of data has a value and cost; the value of data is dependent on the relevance and how much money it can generate and the cost is associated with storing and retrieving data.
Data quality
In it’s raw form, data may be low quality
Data is frequently processed or “cleaned up” based on how it will be used; merging different sources, recording relevant metadata etc
Information life cycle
Tier 1 - represents data at its highest value and use. It should be processed and interpreted to maximise its value
Tier 2 - brand new unprocessed data or older data that is not as relevant.
Tier 3 - old data that is archived, unlikely to be used.
