16
Q

What does daily total rainfall refer to

A

Daily totals refer to 24 hour periods commencing at 0900 Greenwich Mean Time (1000 British
Summer Time) on the day of entry and includes any solid precipitation, such as snow or hail, which
is melted and measured in the same way as rainfall.

17
Q

What does trace or tr mean when referring to rainfall

A

A ‘trace or tr’ of rain is an amount less than 0.05mm.

18
Q

What are all totals of rainfall in

A

mm

19
Q

What is daily total sunshine measured by

A

At most Met Office stations sunshine is measured by an instrument that measures the amount of
solar radiation exceeding a threshold

20
Q

What are sunshine amounts recorded in

A

Sunshine amounts are recorded in hours and tenths and show the amount of bright sunshine
recorded on the day of entry.

21
Q

What units are wind speeds given in

A

Knot

22
Q

What does 1 knot = in mph

A

1.15 mph

23
Q

What is rhe daily mean speed averaged over

A

The daily mean speed is averaged over the 24 hours from 0000GMT on the date given.

24
Q

What is the daily mean wind direction rounded to

A

The dearest 10°

25
Q

What is the direction of the maximum gust measured from

A

The direction of the maximum gust is that direction from which the wind was blowing when the
maximum gust during the hour commencing at the time of entry occurred, and is measured in
degrees from true north

26
Q

What is the speed of the wind also categorised accoutring to

A

The Beaufort scale

27
Q

For the uk locations the wind gust direction are also listed as?

A

Cardinal directions

28
Q

What is cloud cover measured in

A

Eights
(oktas)

29
Q

What is visibility

A

Visibility is defined as the greatest distance at which an object can be seen and recognized in
daylight, or at night could be seen and recognized if the general illumination were raised to daylight
level.

30
Q

What is visibility meausred using

A

It is measured using visiometer at automatic sites but used to be done by observers at manual
stations except at some Weather Centres and Climate Data Logger stations, where observations are
made from a non-standard roof top exposure.

31
Q

T or f
Visibility is meausred horizontally

A

T

32
Q

What units are visibility used in

A

Decametres
Dam

33
Q

What indicates that data is not available for visibility

A

A dash

34
Q

What is the units fro pressure (sea level)
Old + new

A

Units - the pressure unit used in meteorology was previously the millibar (one bar = 1000
millibars). However, this has been replaced by the SI unit of pressure — the pascal (Pa).
One hectopascal (hPa) = 1 millibar (mb).

35
Q

One heteopascal = how many millibars

A
