Data Processor Role Flashcards
What do you know about the company (Geoquip Marine?)
Est. 2011. Public and private sector clients.
Specialise in offshore geotechnical site investigations. This is for energy, minerals, cable laying etc.
Data from the seabed and sub-strata - e.g. where to put foundations for a wind turbine. They get the data, compile it into reports/recommendations.
Own vessels - drill, sample, offshore lab, onshore lab. Role pivotal in ‘centre’ of this? Clean, analyse input etc.
Give me an example of inputting data to a high-quality level
Farm Carbon Toolkit - updated live emissions factor. 10000s users. Multistage and complex.
Brightpearl - data analyst. Robust data or fail. Cleansed, validated, input - using UI or python scripts.
Octopus - Had to be across the detail on a wide range of topics, huge reputational damage for bad information.
Why do you want this job? (GeoEquip marine?)
INDUSTRY: values led, energy, fascinating, pivotal yet overlooked
COMPANY: Culture, beach clean, looking after people - says a lot
ROLE: In transition. Sweet spot - what I’ve done, want to build on, and what I enjoy.
VENN DIAGRAM
Tell me about maintaining/developing DBs
In bootcamp, developed an entire back end - the DB structure, dummy data, queries, linking to REST API calls.
Further back - degree and a bit of Access work. But mostly spreadsheets.
Tell me about your tech support skills
It’s something I’ve done across numerous roles over the last 11 years, Always got good feedback and good number/metrics for targets e.g. satisfaction or response times.
Always more to learn, but…
Tell me about your experience of analysing data
Had few roles where reporting matters:
FCT - data analysis on website visitors. Key decision making (e.g. ad spend).
Octopus - determining our busiest times and platforms. Insights, action (closing helpdesk early).
Tell me about implementing or following protocols
At BP data analyst, had to make the rules a bit. Drew up some docs. A bit like a schema. Had to invent the process.
Once invented, I created tools to try to improve/automate some of the work.
Also, did the same thing at bp for ticket process
Tell me about enhancing processes/workflows
Capactiy to improve things (BP and Octopus).
BP - bigger clients, excel data limit. Built Java program to automate and save time.
Inventory imports crashing - enlisted partner developer to build API tool to fix.
Octopus - process improvements around rota, changing recruitment style, doing more with less, a lot of retention stuff (benefits e.g. spotify)
Questions for them?
What does a typical day look like?
How do you see the company evolving over the next 5 years?
What’s the genesis of the role (expansion? Backfilling?)
Flexible working - what does that entail? How often in the office etc.?
What would the first few months in the role look like?
How would you describe the culture of the company?
Tell me about yourself
Graduated uni 10 years ago. Since then a lot of customer service work, some technical aspects - never felt I made the most of the tech skills I have.
About a year ago, decided to try and build my tech skills back up - FCT, course, now looking for a more technical challenge
What are your strengths?
I’m a natural problem solver, and I have an aptitude for finding things that could be streamlined. Tenacity - don’t give up.
What are your weaknesses?
I can be a bit shy at times, public speaking is not something I’ve always been thrilled at having to do, but it’s something I’m aware of and I do try and work on. I’ve done lots of presentations at Octopus for various people to try and put me outside my comfort zone a bit. And they seem to go down well.
What’s your greatest achievement?
Helping to build a world class rapid response team on Twitter. It took a lot of hard work, thinking outside the box, doing things I wasn’t always experienced in or comfortable in (e.g. hiring). But the Twitter team are flying and highly respected even at Twitter itself.
Where do you want to go in your career
I’m really interested in data insights, data analysis, the power of good data and presenting that data well in helping shape people’s opinions.
E.g. infographics
