DATA PRESENTATION Flashcards
Describe when to use a simple line graph.
A simple line graph is used to show changes in continuous data as time passes. Time is always plotted along the x axis and the variable along the y axis. A line graph could show how total population has changed in England over the last 100 years or how annual temperature change for London.
On which axis of a line graph would you plot the data which is variable, such as temperature.
Variable data is always plotted on the x axis.
Describe when to use a bar chart.
Bar graph are used to show data that fits into categories, for example types of vegetation, types of road vehicles or types of fossil fuels. But they should not be used to show data that changes over time. Also the bars should always be drawn with a gap between the them.
What graphical technique would be used to present the frequency of wind experienced in one place from varies directions over a 24 hour period.
The graphical technique that would be used would be a wind rose.
Which types of graph would be used to represent six different types of vegetation recorded in one area.
The graph used would be a bar chart.
Which types of graph would be used to represent population growth of Loughborough between 1900 and 2012.
The graph used would be a line graph.
Describe why a scattergraph would be used to present data.
A scatter graph is used to show the relationship between two sets of data. For example, the relationship could be positive, negative or random.
When constructing a scatter graph the independent variable is plotted is plotted on the x axis and the independent variable on the y axis. On which axis would you plot the following two variables a) a countries GDP and b) the number of cell phones per 1000 people.
The GDP would be plotted on the x axis and the number of cell phones per 1000 people on the y axis.
Describe how to plot a line of best fit on a scattergraph.
The line of best fit should be a straight line and not a curve. It should follow the general relationship and the graph should then have equal number of data points on either side of the line.
Describe the 2 sets of data a population pyramid shows.
A population pyramid shows population structure according to age and gender.
Is a population pyramid a type of bar chart or histogram.
A population pyramid is a type of histogram. This is because there are no gaps between the bars and the data is continuous.
Describe when to use a pie graph.
Pie charts are used when the data has been broken down into different categories. For example, the different types of energy used in the British Isles.
A group of students constructed a wind rose. Describe 4 pieces of information that a wind rose shows.
A wind rose shows 1) the direction that the wind has come from, 2) the number of day the wind has blown from a particular direction, 3) the speed of the wind from a particular direction and 4) the number of calm days.
What graphical technique would be used to present pressure readings taken at many points over the continent if Europe.
The graphical technique that would be used would an isolines map.
Describe 2 pieces of information that a flow diagram shows.
A flow diagram is used to show direction and amount of movement. For example, the number of people migrating to the British Isles from different countries or how many cars are moving into and out of the CBD.
