Why protect Data?
- Compulsory under Australian Law
- Ethics/Moral Obligation
- Can affect reputation and reduce trust if breached
Stages of Data
Collection -> Storage -> Update -> Disposal
Data Breach:
when personal information is accused or disclosed without authorisation or is lost
Why must companies notify affected individuals?
Can’t keep breaches under law and have to disclose publically even if it betrays trust
Backup
Refers to a copy of data that may be used to restore the original in the event the latter is damaged beyond repaired
Archive
refers to a single or collection of historical records specifically selected for long time retention and for future reference. Usually data that is no longer actively used
Disaster Recovery plan
A set of steps to protect data in the event of a disaster or loss of primary data
Recovery point objective (RPO)
The total amount of data prepared to lose at any point
Recovery Time Objective (RTO)
The total amount of time to recover the maximum amount of data after an incident has occured
Purpose of DRP
- Minimise Data loss
- Minimise Down Time
- Includes storing data off-site
Audit Trail
A set of chronological records about the data, and provides information on how data comes into or leaves the company
