What is the definition of data?
Data is a collection of raw facts and figures
State an example of data.
Data could be numbers, characters, transaction, dates, true/false values, symbols or readings from sensors.
Example: 1:03, 1:07, 1:15.
Where on a computer can data be stored?
The raw facts and figures (data) may easily be stored in a computer database, spreadsheet or text file.
Does a datum as it stand have any significance or value?
No. Data has no significance or value until information and knowledge are applied.
What is the definition of information?
Information is processed data. Information has a context which makes it meaningful, Computers output information.
State an example of information.
Example: 1:03, 1:07, 1:15 minutes, times in a swimming race.
The data has been processed by sorting the times in ascending order, fastest first so that the winner can be identified.
What is an easy way to remember the definition of information?
Information = data + context
What is the definition of knowledge?
Knowledge is gained by interpreting and applying rules to information. It is the basis for informed decisions.
What is knowledge derived from?
Information. It does so by applying rules to it.
State an example of knowledge.
Example: the person with the time 1:03 has won because the rule is that; the person who completes the swim in the shortest time is the winner.
