Data Communication Flashcards
What is Data transmission
Movement of electrical signals that represent data using a network
Difference between guided and unguided
Guided is where data travels along a physical path (wired)
Unguided is where signals are propagated in the air (wireless)
What is Bandwidth
Difference of the upper frequency and the lower frequency in which a medium can successfully transmit. It is measured in Hertz
What is the relation between bandwidth and bit rate
There is a linear relation where the higher the bandwidth the higher the bit rate is.
What is latency
Time delay that occurs when something is initiated and moment its first effect begins
What is serial transmission
Signals transmitted on the bus one bit after another
What is the advantages and disadvantages of serial transmission
Advantages: Good for long distance, low cost as only two cables used, easy to route
Disadvantages: Signal strength decreases further away you get
What is bit rate
Number of bits transmitted per second
What is baud rate
The number of signal changes per second
Baud Rate = Bit rate / number of bits per signal change
What is parallel signal transmission
The connecting wires have multiple cables allowing for simultaneous transmission. Can lead to skew where bits become out of sync
What is synchronous data transmission
Where data is sent in a constant flow, with the sender and the receiver having clocks tick in sync
What is asynchronous data transmission
Data transmission where the sender and the receiver are in sync only during the data transmission
