Data Collection Flashcards
Variable that is out of the researcher’s control
Random variable
The 3 Basic Methods of Collecting Data are:
Retrospective study (using historical data), observational study (data presently collected) and designed experiment (data collected in response to process input changes
2 Types of Reasoning
Forward Reasoning
?? Reasoning
What is forward reasoning?
Uses established, physical laws; uses past data to determine uncertainty/tolerance
forward reasoning
What is the purpose of data gathering (with regards to hypotheses)
To verify of nullify a hypothesis
From a small subset, you use inference to determine the nature of a larger set
Backward Reasoning
What is a one-sample hypothesis test?
A hypothesis test wherein the researcher compared the nature of one sample to a target/ideal/certain value (*EX: Is the departure time of EE1 students earlier than 7am?)
What is a two-sample hypothesis test?
A hypothesis test that compares the nature of two samples (EX: is the departure time of EE1 students earlier that EA1 students?)
Experiment vs Survey
In an experiment, you have variables you can control — in a survey, you can only specify the type of data you’re going to collect and from how many
