What is meant by data?
Raw stats and figures which do not have a meaning to humans
How can you input data?
- Keyboard
- Speech recognition using a mic
- Webcam
- Touch screen
- Sensors
- Bar-code reader
What is direct data capture?
Collecting data for a particular purpose. E.g. reading bar-code of of product at the till to identify it.
What is indirect data?
Collection of data as a by-product from another purpose. E.g. using data from a bar-code to see stock levels.
What is encoding data?
Encoding data is putting data into an appropriate binary code.
What is binary code?
Binary code is a system used to represent different types of data. It is represented by either 0 or 1
What is Coding data?
Shortening the original data into an agreed manner. For example gender is shortened to M or F
Why are codes used?
- Easy to remember
- Quicker to enter
- Take up less storage
What is information?
Information is data which has been processed and converted to give it meaning to a human being.
