Data and Data presentation Flashcards
Name 4 measures of central tendency?
Mean, Median, Mode, Mid Range
What is the mean susceptible to?
Mean uses all data in the average so it is susceptible to outliers
Is the median affected by outliers?
No the value of each peice of data is not included
What is the node useful for?
When you’ve got a huge enouigh data set for it to effective
What is the mid range usueful for?
When you have a symmetrical distribution
What does data need to be if a histogram is used
Data needs to be continious and grouped
What are the advantages of histograms? (2)
- Helps if you have varying class widths
- Good for continious data
What is the equation that links area and frequency if you have a sdcale factor?
Frequency = Area * Scale Factor
Area = Frequency/Scale Factor
What do you do if you get gaps in a histogram?
The gaps can’t be there they must be split evenly between the two groups either side
What is the advantage of a stem and leaf diagram?
- Data is ordered
- Raw data is preserved
- Comparing length of leaves show distribution
What types of data are bar charts good at showing?
Categorical data
What are the advantages of pie charts?
Good at comparing two data sets of different sizes
Whats the difference between a line chart and dot plots?
Dot plot has dots for frequency
