Data Anaylsis And Presentation Flashcards
What are some examples of psychological research methods ?
Case studies( primary)
Self reports( primary)
Questionnaires (primary)
Interviews (primary)
Governments statistics (secondary)
Meta analysis (secondary)
What is quantitative data ?
Refers to data that can be measured numerically by the psychologist so that statistical analysis can be completed e.g. scores on an IQ test or number of correct items recalled on a memory test
What is Qualitative data ?
Refers to data that can be observed, but not measured numerically. It usually takes the form of words, thoughts and feelings, and is difficult to analyse e.g. detail about how a pots feels about having an impairment in memory
What are strengths of quantitative data ?
Easy to analyse and bias present graphically.
Easier to draw comparison between conditions than qualitative.
What are strengths of qualitative data ?
Rich in detail, provides in depth, detailed data.
Can offer a more individualised ‘human view of behaviours “.
What are the limitation of quantitative data?
Not rich in detail
Condenses human phenomenon into numbers
Too simplistic
What are the limitation to qualitative data ?
Not easy to analyse
Takes time and effect(only a smaller sample)
What is primary data?
Information that is collected from first-hand experience.
Researches has control over the data so the hypothesis can be tested (strength) however it is a length process which makes it expensive (drawback)
What is secondary data?
This is data that is collected from another purpose than the current research. For e.g. using government statistics about treatment on mental health. It is easier to access someone else’s data which makes the process quicker and cheaper ( strength) however the data may not fit the exact needs of the study (drawback).
What is objective ?
Personal opinions or biases do not influence the research process. This is the main aim of scientific psychology.
What is subjective ?
This is when the investigators opinions and based influence their findings.
