Dash-One: Section 3 Flashcards
The 3 Basic Rules
- MAINTAIN AIRCRAFT CONTROL.
- Analyze the situation and take proper action.
- Land as soon as conditions permit.
Ground Egress
- PERSONAL EQUIPMENT - DISCONNECT
- BRAKES - RELEASE
- CANOPY/DOOR - OPEN
- AIRCRAFT - ABANDON
NOTE:
If fire, obstructed canopy or overturned a/c make normal escape from the front seats impossible, either fold backrest and leave through rear door or use canopy breaker in order to escape through the canopy.
Engine Fire On Ground
- FUEL SELECTOR - OFF
- THROTTLE - FULL FORWARD
- ENGINE - CRANK (if not running)
- BATTERY - OFF
- EPU - OFF
- MAGNETOS - OFF
- GROUND EGRESS - EXECUTE
NOTE:
Use aircraft fire extinguisher, if deemed effective.
Aborted Take-Off
Major reason for ABORTED TAKE-OFF:
Complete or partial loss of power. Fire or overheat indication. Tire failure. Fuel flow zero. Other abnormal readings or functions such as low manifold pressure, low RPM, rough engine operation etc. misjudgment of available take-off distance
- THROTTLE - IDLE
- BRAKES - AS REQUIRED
If necessary
- Mixture - cut off
- Switches - off
- Fuel selector - off
NOTE:
With obstacles ahead and insufficient braking action, ground loop aircraft.
Engine Failure During Take-Off
A. DURING TAKE-OFF - ABORT B. DURING INITIAL CLIMB 1) NOSE - LOWER 2) FLAPS - AS DESIRED 3) LAND - AHEAD
WARNING:
Never try to turn back to the runway.
NOTE:
Slight course deviation in order to avoid obstacles are allowable, airspeed permitting.
If time permits, continue FORCED LANDING.
Engine Failure In Flight
If unable to maintain safe altitude, execute BAIL-OUT, FORCED LANDING OR DITCHING.
- AIRSPEED - 80 KIAS
- FLAPS - UP
- MAGNETOS - BOTH ON
- AUXILIARY FUEL PUMP - ON
- FUEL SELECTOR - BOTH ON
- MIXTURE - RICH
- ALTERNATE AIR - PULL
NOTE:
If engine has stopped and time permits, execute appropriate ENGINE AIRSTART.
Engine Airstart, Prop Rotating
- MIXTURE - CUT OFF
- THROTTLE - FULL FORWARD after 3 - 5 seconds pull back to 1/4 open.
- MIXTURE - RICH
Engine Airstart, Prop Stopped
- MIXTURE - CUT OFF
- THROTTLE - OPEN 1/4
- RIGHT MAGNETO - OFF
- START BUTTON - PRESS UNTIL ENGINE FIRES
- MIXTURE - RICH WHEN ENGINE FIRES
- RIGHT MAGNETO - ON
Smoke Or Fumes In Cockpit Or Positive CO Indication
- CABIN HEAT & VENT - OFF
- FRESH AIR SCOOPS - OPEN
- LAND - AS SOON AS POSSIBLE
Continue Engine Fire In Flight or Electrical Fire as applicable.
Engine Fire In Flight
A. FIRE CONFIRMED
1. CABIN HEAT & VENT - OFF 2. FUEL SELECTOR - OFF 3. THROTTLE - FULL FORWARD 4. MAGNETOS - OFF 5. EXECUTE BAIL-OUT FORCED LANDING OR DITCHING - AS APPLICABLE
WARNING:
Do not attempt to restart.
B. Fire not confirmed
1. Land - As soon as practical
Electrical Fire
- GENERATOR - OFF
- BATTERY - OFF
- LAND - As soon as possible
If fire and/or smoke continues
4. EPU battery - Off
If necessary for continued flight
- Unnecessary equipment - Off
- Battery - On
NOTE:
The electrical EMERGENCY POWER UNIT (EPU) will supply sufficient power to the ST-BY ATTITUDE INDICATOR, the VHF-2 COM radio and the MAP LIGHTS for approximately 2 hours.
NOTE:
If equipment on the secondary bus is necessary for completion of the flight the generator must be switched on.
Oil System Failure
Oil pressure warning light illuminates and/or low oil pressure indication.
- RPM & POWER - LOWEST PRACTICAL
- LAND - As soon as possible (or practical if oil press is above 25 psi)
NOTE:
Reduction of power and minimizing G forces will generally prolong the engine operating time, prior to complete engine failure.
In case of total oil pressure loss the propeller blades move into coarse pitch (low RPM), and thereby reduce available power.
Forced Landing
- AIRSPEED - 80 KIAS
- LANDING AREA - SELECT
- IFF/SIF - EMERGENCY
- SEAT BELT - TIGHT & LOCKED
- RADIO - MAYDAY CALL
- FUEL SELECTOR - OFF
- THROTTLE - SULL FORWARD
- MAGNETOS - OFF
CAUTION:
Aim to join the forced landing pattern on one of the key positions, taking the prevailing wind into consideration.
NOTE:
For max. glide distance (1,5 nm/1000’) maintain 80 kts.
Ditching
- FORCED LANDING CHECK - COMPLETE
- CREW - WARN
Just before ditching:
3. CANOPY/DOOR - OPEN
After ditching:
4. AIRCRAFT - ABANDON
WARNING:
Do not inflate life jacket until clear of aircraft.
The SARBE must be activated manually.
CAUTION:
To eliminate the possibility of being trapped inside the aircraft, which is likely to flip inverted, select deeper rather than shallow water.
NOTE:
Ditch aircraft upwind in a full stall attitude, but in heavy sea along and on falling side of waves.
EPU Battery Malfunction
EPU BATTERY malfunction is indicated by inoperative ST-BY ATTITUDE INDICATOR, VHF-2 COM radio and map lights .
- EPU switch - Check on
If EPU switch is on and the items above still are inoperative
- EPU switch - Off
- Land - As soon as practical
