Darwinism Flashcards
Say what contributions Linneaus, Lamarck, Cuvier, Lyell, Wallace and Malthus made to evolutionary models.
Linnaeus spoke about organism adaptations being evidence for species having purpose. Lamarck said species evolve through use and disuse of body parts and inheritance of acquired characteristics. Cuvier proposed catastrophism, Lyell proposed uniformitarianism, Wallace had similar theory to Darwin about evolution and Malthus agreed on potential for human population to increase faster than food.
What were the four observations and two inferences Darwin made for natural selection?
Traits vary in members of population, parent to offspring inheritance, population more than environment can support. Lack of food can kill offspring. Inferences were that members with characteristics allowing them to survive and reproduce at higher rate leave more offspring. Unequal ability to produce offspring leads to accumulation of favourable traits over generations.
What are the four lines of evidence for natural selection?
Predation on Guppy population, Hiv drug, homology, vestigial structures, biogeography
