Darwin Flashcards
Naturalist
Person who studies plants and animals by observing them.
Variation
Slight difference in the appearance of individual members of a species.
Natural Selection
Process by which populations of organisms with variations that help them survive in their environments live longer, compete better and reproduce more than those that do not have the variations
Adaptation
Characteristic of a species that enables the species to survive in its environment.
Camouflage
Adaptation that enables species to blend in with their enviroments
Mimicry
Resemblance of one species to another species
Selective breeding
The breeding of organisms for desired characteristics
Comparative
Study of similarities and differences among structures of living species
Analogous Structure
Body part found in multiple species that preforms a similar function but differs in structure
Homologous Structure
Body part found in multiple species that is similar in structure and position but different in function
Vestigial Structure
Body part that has lost its original function through evolution
Embryology
Science of the development of embryos from fertilization to birth!
