Dark Matter Flashcards

1
Q

How do you weigh a galaxy?

A

•measure their light assuming galaxies mostly sun like stars (1L=1Ms) and add up starlight to convert to star mass
•or measure their gravity and orbital velocity then use newtons law

Q

How do you measure the orbital velocity of a spiral galaxy?

A

•measure spectral if two sides of a galaxy go get redshift
•lhs rotating towards us
•rhs rotating away
•use velocity difference from two sides to get rotation speed

Q

What would happen if galaxies were held together only be gravity from stars and gas?

A

They would fly apart because they are spinning so fast

11
Q

What does cluster gravity do to light?

A

Bends it around it(arcs background galaxies lensed around cluster mass)

16
Q

What is an example of WIMPs?

A

Neutrinos

17
Q

Why can’t neutrinos be dark matter?

A

Too small and fast

18
Q

What are properties of WIMPs?

A

•mass
•collision properties
•temperature (velocity dispersion)

19
Q

When do things tend to go wrong in physics?

A

When accelerations small

20
Q

Why does modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) fail?

A

•not einsteinian and we need relativity
•gets too complex if added to relativity
•gets galaxy motions wrong
