410AD Roman legions are recalled from Britannia to defend Rome. Britannia is told that it is on its own

A

Between c.400 and c.700AD Britannia is invaded by Angles and Saxons from Europe. They wanted England’s goods for themselves.
The Saxons and Angles join to become the Anglo-Saxons

A little bit of peace

A

Anglo-Saxons warlords who are powerful enough declare themselves Kings, so England was made up of several small kingdoms. There is an uneasy period of peace. The kingdoms trade and talk but never trust each other between c.600 and c.800AD

Vikings!

A

Sometime around 800AD Viking raiders from Norway begin raiding the coastline of England. Anglo-Saxons Kings are unable to cope. Viking colonies are set up

Danelaw

A

In mid-ninth century, vikings begin to fight Anglo-Saxons Kings of northern and central England, by the end of the tenth century. England was split in two with the Vikings ruling Danelaw (northern and central England) and the Anglo-Saxons ruling Wessex (the south)

A

Viking warlords grow power and at the beginning of the eleventh century a Viking, Canute, is crowned king of all England; Norway; and Denmark. England was united under the Vikings

Viking Britan

A

Between 1015 and 1042 England is ruled ny Viking Kings. King Canute believed he was so powerful he could hold back sea, he was wrong and he in fact drowned. His two sons Harefoot and Harthacanute ruled England after him.

The Anglo-Saxons return!

A

In 1042 King Harthacanute, Canute’s son, died. He was the last Viking king of England. Edward the Confessor, an Anglo-Saxon, was crowned king and the Vikings were forced out of England
