Punishment: has to see all of his sons die and has to eat them in the end. (33.71-75)
Poetic justice: he has to take his loved ones lives because he murdered.

Poetic justice: no warmth or light, they become vulnerable and cannot kill

What is canto 34 about?
Sin: traitors to their benefactors and lords. (34.61-7)
Punishment: Submerged in ice in all different positions.
Poetic justice: once betrayed God so now they are being eaten by the ultimate betrayed of god, Lucifer.

What is canto 3 about?
Canto 3 - starts with Dante reading inscription over gates of hell. Dante is horrified by sights of spirits in deep pain. SIN - SOULS OF THE UNCOMITTED(also angels who were not rebellious against God nor faithful to satan). NEITHER in Heaven or Hell. CHARON doesn’t want to let Virgil and Dante on the boat. Dante faints bc of earthquake.
What happens in canto 4?
Woken up by thunder. They enter the first circle of Hell - LIMBO.
Virtuous pagans reside here. Born without benefit of Christianity or bc they were NOT baptized. All kinds of rulers and philosophers like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle are here.
Their punishment - eternal sighs, ho hum.
What is canto 5 about?
SECOND circle of Hell. Actual beginning of Hell.
MINOS - great beast - examines souls for judgement, Sinners confess, Minos wraps tail around them to determine the # circle where they belong.
This circle is for LUST.
The two lovers were murdered
PUNISHMENT: tossed and whirled by winds
Poetic justice: in life they were helpless to the tempests of passion, now they are helplessly whirled about.
What happens to the sinners in canto 11?
They are boiled in the blood of people they killed
What is canto 6 about?
Dante awakens in 3rd circle of hell. Sin is GLUTTONS.
Punishment: stinking slush falls from the sky and collects on the ground where naked sinners howl and roll in the mire.
CERBERUS- 3headed monster barks, claws, and bites sinners within reach.
POETIC JUSTICE: they roll in the mire like pigs bc they engorged like pigs in reveal life
What happened in canto 7 circle 5?
2 types of sinners:
WRATH AND SULLENNESS
PUNISHMENT: wrathful have to ruthlessly attack one another, sullen stew below the surface of the muddy swamp.
What happens in canto 13
They enter a pathless, dismal, wood. Black leaves, misshapen branches, poisonous branches barren of fruit.
HARPIES NEST HERE.
PUNISHMENT: the trees are actually people and when Dante breaks a branch from one it starts to bleed. Harpies eat the tree leaves giving it great pain.
SIN: suicide
Poetic justice: because they tore their bodies from their souls, the harpies eat their tree body parts(leaves) from them.
What happens in canto 19?
In 3rd (pit/ditch/trench). SIN: Simony - used position in church for personal monetary gain. PUNISHMENT: upside down in round holes the size of a baptismal with soles of feet on fire
What happens in canto 20?
SIN: fortune tellers and Diviners
PUNISHMENT: sinners must walk with their heads on backwards and tears in their eyes
Poetic justice: they tried to tell the future which is only known to god.
