What are the 9 classes of Dangerous goods (7.1 AEPM)?
- Explosives (1.4S is only category allowed on passenger AC)
- Flammable, Non-Flammable and Toxic Gases
- Flammable Liquids
- Flammable Solids, Spontaneous Combustibles and Dangerous When Wet
- Oxidisers and Organic Peroxides
- Toxic and Infectious Substances
- Radioactive Materials
- Corrosive
- Misc (ie. magnetic material and lithium batteries)
Dangerous Goods definition (7.1 AEPM):
Dangerous Goods are articles or substances which are capable of posing a risk to health, safety, property or the environment when transported by air. They are classified into nine hazard classes.
Who governs Dangerous Goods at Qantas (7.2.2 AEPM)?
Act and Regulations
Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA)
They follow:
* the Australian Civil Aviation Act Section 23, and
* the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Regulations (CASRs)
What is ICAO (7.2.2 AEPM)?
Act and Regulations
International Civil Aviation Organization. These provide regulations. They are a branch of the United Nations.
What is IATA (7.2.2 AEPM)?
Act and Regulations
International Air Transport Association. These regulations are the commerical avaiation indutsry guidelines. Often more restrictive than ICAO regulations.
What to do in event of a PED/Lithium Battery fire (7.4.2 AEPM)?
Inflight Emergencies
- Basic fire drill
- Remove external power from the device
- Don heat resistant gloves (or other protection)
- Contact CC to continue fire drill
- If smoke/fumes, complete EP for this
- Make entry in AC Technical Log
- Complete Intelex report
Put on oxygen mask (100%) before using BCF/HALON in FD.
What to do in event of a inflight dangerous goods fire incident (7.4.5 AEPM)?
Inflight Emergencies
- Basic fire drill
- Identify the items if possible (ask passenger)
- Move passengers away from the area and distribute wet towels or cloths
- Regulary inspect the area
- Assist in the completion of Pilot Report and Intelex Safety Report
What to do in event of a inflight dangerous goods spillage or leakage incident (7.5.2 AEPM)?
Inflight Emergencies
- Notify PIC of nature of emergency
- Identify the items if possible (ask passenger)
- Obtain Dangerous Goods Spill Kit/Hygiene kit
- Don rubber gloves, PBE or oxygen
- Move passengers away from the area and distribute wet towels or cloths
- Place the item inside on Dangerous Goods bag with the break facing up
- All materials contaminated in the clean up effort must be placed in the bag
- Close the first bag and seal using one tie.
Do not make it airtight. Ensure that when removing excess air that you are not directly above the opening - Place the first bag into the second dangerous goods bag using the same procedure. For added protection against corrosion or broken glass, it is important that the first bag is placed into a second bag, sealed and tagged
- Tag and stow bag in aft lavatory waste bin or stowage designated by the Captain. Tag and lock lavatory door or designated stowage with dangerous goods tag.
- Treat affected seat cushion/covers/first class mattresses in the same manner as the Dangerous Goods item.
- Cover spillage on carpet/floor.
- Regularly inspect lavatory or stowage used and contaminated areas.
- Ensure an appropriate entry is made in the Cabin/IFE Log.
- After landing: Identify to ground personnel Dangerous Goods item and stowage location. Assist in the completion of an Air Safety Incident Report.
What to do in event of a inflight dangerous goods infectious substances incident (7.6.1 AEPM)?
Same as spillages as well as:
1. If bodily fluids: Must use the apron, latex gloves and goggles found in the Hygiene Kit
2. When performing ‘mouth to mouth’ or ‘mouth to nose’ resuscitation, a laerdal mask should be used
3. Soiled articles (and all items in cleanup procedure) in containated waste bag or orange bag with infectious waste label
4. Wash area with soap and water and wipe surface with Purrel disinfectant spray
5. Wash your hands
