Factors influence the amount of damage a teratogen can cause
1.Strength of the teratogen
2.Timing of teratogenic insult
3.Teratogen’s affinity for specific tisue
is an immunologic survey to determine whether these infections exist in either the pregnant woman ( to identify fetal risk factors) or the newborn. to detect if antibodies against the common infectious teratogens are present.)
Torch screen
TOXOPLASMOSIS- a protozoan infection, spread most commonly through contact with uncooked meat, although it may also be contraced through handling cat stool in soil or cat litter.
Fetal damage?
the infant may be born with central nervous system damage, hydrocephalus, microcephaly, intracerebral calcification, and retinal deformities.
CYTOMEGALOVIRUS- a member of herpes virus family.
fetal damage?
the infant maybe born neurologically challenged (hydrocephalus, microcephaly), or with eye damage, deafness, or chronic liver disease.
The child skin maybe covered with large petechiae( “blueberry-muffin” lesions”)
Herpes simplex virus (genital herpes infection)
fetal damge?
