Why must we cool down?

A

 To allow the heart rate to gradually return to normal
 To prevent buildup of waste products or toxins such as lactic acid, in the muscles, thereby
helping to prevent muscle stiffness and soreness
 To prevent pooling of blood in the muscles - this can cause you to feel dizzy due to
reduced blood supply to the brain

Q

State what each letter means and how to do it.

A

 Rest – stop the activity immediately
 Ice – apply ice for 10 minutes at intervals to reduce pain and swelling. Ice should not be
applied directly to the skin but it should be crushed and wrapped in a wet towel
 Compression – apply a moderately firm bandage over the affected area and all around it
to help control swelling
 Elevation – raise the injury and keep it that way for 24 hours to improve the drainage of
fluid and reduce the flow of blood to the area
 Diagnosis – get a professional opinion if you are concerned about the injury
