Adequate compensation only for pecuniary loss suffered by a person as he has duly proved
Actual / compensatory damages
Physical suffering, mental anguish, fright, serious anxiety, besmirsched reputation, wounded feelings, moral shock, social humiliation and similar injury
Moral damages
Monetary compensation over and above actual or compensatory damages awarded as punishment or deterrence, because of the wanton, reckless, malicious or oppressive nature of the wrong committed; “correction for the public good”
Exemplary / corrective damages
Trifling sum awarded to the plaintiff in an action where there is no substantial loss or injury to be compensated but where the law recognizes a technical invasion of the right of the plaintiff or a breach of the defendant’s duty
Nominal damages
Those agreed by the parties to a contract, to be paid in case of breach thereof
Liquidated damages
More than nominal but less than compensatory damages recovered when the court finds that some pecuniary loss has been suffered but it’s amount cannot be proved with certainty
Temperate / moderate damage
Pecuniary compensations that may be recovered for an injury sustained or from breach of some duty, or violation of some right recognized by law
