what is the main role of DAERA?
-responsible for ensuring food safety and maintaining public health by supporting the Agri- food sector
-they also promote the humane treatment of animals and protection of the environment
how do DAERA promote animal health?
-work on disease control
-monitor animal populations on detection of diseases e.g. swine fever
-they have a service Pig Alert Text notifies pig framers on disease outbreaks
-contains the spread of disease whilst protecting human health
how do DAERA promote high standards within the Agri- food sector? what are the purpose of their inspections?
-through training and advice
-example as they advise on approved disinfectants to clean animal housing and vehicles
-maintains good biosecurity
-carry out inspections, audits and testing
-ensures farmers comply with legislation
-inspections are less frequent for farms with a quality assurance scheme e.g. Red Tractor or Lion eggs
-give training to food producers at CAFRE
how do DAERA promote animal welfare?
-they follow up complaints about animal welfare
-prevent animals with poor health getting into the food chain
-attempt to contain the spread of antimicrobial resistance
-Fish Health Inspectors FHI carry out inspections of fish in the wild and farmed fish docks in NI
-if waters are infected with a disease preventative measures will occur to control the disease
how do DAERA enforce legislation to promote food safety?
-enforce legislation and inspect milk and egg production premises
-Veterinary Public Health Programme monitor animals produced for human consumption
-ensure veterinary certification for meat (both imported and exported)
-VPHP responsible for safety of animal feed which maintains the integrity of the NI food chain
how do DAERA promote plant health to ensure food safety?
-the Plant Health Inspection Branch PHIB help with pest and disease control
-detect and manage populations to prevent the spread of harmful pests, prevents the destruction of plant habitats
-implement EU laws on Agricultural regulations regulations
-they quarantine and kill off pests and disease that will destroy the plant entirely, improves safety of the food chain
-provide certification for imported and exported plant products
-in a pest or disease outbreak, DAERA take quick action to eradicate the risk
