DA Flashcards
Antiplatelets
Prevent blood from clotting, decrease platelet aggregation and inhibit thrombus formation in arterial circulation
Types of antiplatelet drugs
Aspirin, Clopidogrel, Dipyridamole
Drugs used to prevent further CV disease
Antiplatelets, lipid lowering drugs, anti-arrhymias, anticoagulants, diuretics, ace-inhibitors
Drugs used to reduce symptoms of CV disease
Diuretics, anti-arrhymias, nitrates, calcium channel blockers, ACE-inhibitors
Aspirin MOA
Inhibits platelet aggregation, alters balance of throboxane A2 and prostacyclin
Clopidogrel MOA
Inhibits ADP induced platelet aggregation
Dipyridamole MOA
Inhibits platelet phosphodiesterase
Aspirin, Clopidogrel and Dipyridamole in combination
Significantly reduce chance of heart attack and stroke
Effects of antiplatelets on dentistry
Prolong bleeding time following dental extraction, drug combinations increase the risk
Which drug reduces the risk of an MI
Aspirin
Anticoagulants
Used to prevent blood clots, reduce chance of developing serious conditions like strokes/heart attacks
Types of anticoagulants
Warfarin, rivaroxaban, dabigatran
Warfarin MOA
Inhibits function of enzyme for Vitamine K to produce clotting factors. Makes blood flow easier through the veins, blood less likely to clot
For what conditions is Warfarin prescribed
further blood clots, deep vein thrombsis DVT, pulmonary embolism, heart attacks, strokes
Dental implications of using Warfarin
Bleeding easier than normal. Exctractions ect. may not clot and have prolonged bleeding. INR test.
