D.4 - PH Regulation Of The Stomach Flashcards
What reaction work to reduce the excess stomach acid?
Non-specific reactions such as antacids.
What are active metabolites?
They are the active forms of a drug after it has been processed by the body.
What happens when there is excess stomach acid?
It can cause indigestion, heartburn, and stomach ulcers.
How to antacids work?
They neutralise the excess HCl in the stomach.
What type of bases are antacids?
Weak bases e.g. CaOH2, MgOH2, AlOH3, Na2CO3, NaHCO3. Strong bases cannot be used as they are harmful to the body.
What are proton pump inhibitors (PPIs)?
It is a stomach acid inhibitor that inhibits the proton pumps in the stomach. E.g. Omeprazole.
What are H2 receptor antagonists (H2 blockers)?
They are stomach acid inhibitors that block the histamine receptors in acid-producing cells in the stomach. E.g. ranitidine.
