D4 Flashcards
Methods of camouflage and examples (7)
Crypsis: Avoid detection.
Masquerade: Resemble non-prey items .
Stick insects, mimicry of distasteful species.
Disruptive patterns: Edge disruption.
Chicks + young animals. Edge + cryptic ‘moth’ food items survive 95% after 24hrs.
Countershading: Removes shadows (element of edges)
Pastry catepillars less attacked with counter shading. Disruption of countershading by streetlights –> increase in night flyer predation.
Polymorphisms: Disrupt search images
Phenotypic flexibility of crypsis: Change camouflage.
Pacific octopus, Cuttlefish.
Behavioural background matching: Match camouflage to surrondings. Peppered moths, leaf mimicing species, ground nesting birds
