4 types of social identity complexity
How individuals characterize themself and how they see themself in social groups (race, gender etc.)
Social Identity
The party you play as a member of a social group/in relation to other persons. Roles define behaviors that are expected of you. Examples: sister, friend, teacher, student, father.
Social roles
Relative importance of a particular social identity in a given situation
Identity salience
Fear of confirming negative stereotypes about one’s social group
Stereotype threat
Differences in social, economic or political outcome between different groups in society
Intergroup inequality
Automatic associations or judgement that people may hold due to societal and cultural influences
Implicit bias
Unknowingly making assumptions about someone based on a single trait
Misattribution
Judging someone on the basis of one’s perception of the group to which that person belongs
Stereotyping
An unfounded dislike of a person/group based on their membership to a specific stereotyped group
Prejudiced
Verbal or behavioral insults that communicate negative attitude towards marginalized groups. Ex. a white person crossing the street to avoid walking past a black person
Microaggressions
The impact of diversity in social categories on team dynamics and decision making
Social category diversity
Individuals considering their own and other’s perspectives in anticipation of an interaction
Pre-meeting elaboration
How matching levels of racial diversity between store-unit employees and the community impact sales performance. !! A match in racial diversity were positively related to store-unit sales performance !!
Racial diversity congruence
How individuals influence top managements attention to and understanding of important organizational issues

Self-enhancement
Being two identities, for example both a muslim and a career lady
Merged identity
When someone in a social setting say we are like something and we start thinking about if we are good or bad at what they are saying
Reflected appraisals
Play with an identity and see if it fits or not
Identity work
A belief or expectation, either positive or negative, that influences a person’s behavior in such a way that it causes the belief to be true. Jenni’s example with high & low performance groups
Self-fulfilling prophecy
Tendency to explain a person’s behavior by referring to their character rather than any situational factor
