D&D2 Flashcards
Acute inflammation
PMNs (polymorphonuclear leukocytes)
Chronic inflammation
lymphocytes/ macrophages
most injured cell type
epithelium
4 basic cell types
epithelium (surface/internal), muscle (cardiac, smooth, skeletal), nerve (CNS, PNS), and connective (bone, joint, adipose, blood, bone marrow, lymph nodes, etc)
inflammation -ending
-itis
early, commonly seen changes in injured cells
cell membranes (cell swelling), mitochondria (mitochondrial swelling), endoplasmaic reticulum (distended; decreased ability to make protein), nucleus (appearance)
adaptations to injury
hypertrophy, hyperplasia, atrophy, metaplasia
physiologic hypertrophy
uterus during pregnancy
pathologic hypertrophy
left ventricular hypertrophy due to hypertension
physiologic hyperplasia
proliferation of glandular epithelium of female breast during puberty or pregnancy
pathologic hyperplasia
endometrial hyperplasia in abnormal menstrual bleeding
physiologic atrophy
loss of hormone stimulation in menopause
pathologic atrophy
denervation or diminished blood supply
metaplasia ex (2)
ciliated columnar epithelium of bronchus by squamous epithelium (cigarette smoke)
squamous epithelium in distal esophagus by columnar intestinal epithelium (intestinal metaplasia in Barrett’s esophagus; chronic reflux)
necrosis
cell death associated with loss of membrane integrity. often following ischemia
