D&A: HELL Flashcards
What is the notion of hell?
After death a person is separated from God for eternity.
How is hell sometimes descried in the Bible?
Figuratively as a rubbish dumb, where the useless people are thrown.
What is written in the book of Revelation?
The writer has a vision in which the bad people are thrown into a lake of fiery sulphur (Revelation 21:8)
What is the difficult issue related to the concept of hell?
Can the existence of hell, with eternal punishment, be compatible with the existence of a perfectly loving and perfectly just God?
What problem did Hume raise about hell?
Suggested that the whole idea of hell calls God’s justice into question because a finite sin can never deserve an infinite punishment.
How do people defend against the problem raise by Hume?
Every kind of wrong deserves eternal punishment because wronging God is eternally bad.
What might be the issue in the end for eternal punishment?
It may be as boring as eternal pleasure, as we may become immune to pain.
What other issue does hell raise?
What would eternal punishment achieve, if there were no possibility of redemption?
What does Hick reject?
The traditional doctrine of eternal hell.
How does Hick argue that the belief of hell was developed?
This belief was developed as a form of social control, encouraging people to be fearful.
What is an alternative view of hell that is gaining popularity?
Refers to a second death for the person who has not gained entry into heaven.
How does Revelation 21:8 support the alternative view of hell?
“This is the second death.”
What does Mark 9:43 state about hell?
“hell, where the fire never goes out.”
Why do some see the existence of hell as necessary?
For ultimate justice.
