d Flashcards
What are cells?
The basic building block of all living organisms
What is a tissue?
A group of cells with a similar structure and function.
What is an organ?
Organs are aggregation of tissues performing specific functions.
What is an organ system?
Organs are organised into organ systems, which work together to
form organisms.
How do changes in pH affect enzymes?
pH interferes with the bonds holding the enzyme together. This changes the shape of the active site and denatures the enzyme.
Why does to high of a temperature denature an enzyme?
Some of the bonds holding the enzyme together break. This changes the shape of the enzyme’s active site, so the substrate won’t fit any more.
Where is amylase produced?
Salivary Glands, Pancreas, Small intestine
Where is protease produced?
Pepsin in Stomach, Pancreas, Small intestine
Where is lipase produced?
Small Intenstine and Pancreas
Where is Bile produced, Stored and Released.
Bile is produced in the liver. Stored in the Gall bladder, wherefrom the bile is released into the small intensine.
What does bile do?
Neutralises stomach acid and emulsifies fats.
What do carbohydrases break down? What is produced?
Carbohydrates. Simple sugars like maltose
What do Proteases break down? What is produced?
Protein. Amino acids.
What do Lipases break down? What is produced?
fats. Glycerol and fatty acids.
Why is bile beneficial for digestion?
Alkaline coniditios and large surface area from emulsifying fats to form small droplets increase the rate of fat breakdown by lipase.
