Cytoskeleton and ECM Flashcards
What are the major components of the cytoskeleton?
The major components of the cytoskeleton are:
-Microtubules (tube like)
-Microfilaments (Rope like)
-Intermediate filaments (Metal bond wire like)
How do microtubules regulate cell shape?
Microtubules maintain cell shape by providing structural support, forming the framework for organelles, and controlling cell division through the mitotic spindle. They also help with intracellular transport.
How do microfilaments (actin filaments) regulate cell shape?
Microfilaments are involved in cell shape changes, including cell movement and division. They form the cell cortex beneath the plasma membrane and help cells maintain their shape and motility.
How do intermediate filaments regulate cell shape?
Intermediate filaments provide mechanical strength to cells, helping them resist stress and maintain shape. They form a network that supports the nuclear membrane and the cytoplasm.
What are tight junctions, and what is their function?
Tight junctions are protein complexes that seal adjacent cells together, preventing the leakage of substances between cells and maintaining cell polarity. They regulate paracellular transport.

What are gap junctions, and what is their function?
Gap junctions are channels made up of connexins that allow direct communication between adjacent cells by permitting the passage of ions, metabolites, and signaling molecules.

What are desmosomes, and what is their function?
Desmosomes are adhesive junctions that anchor cells to each other, providing mechanical strength and resistance to stretching. They are critical for tissues that undergo significant mechanical stress, like skin and heart tissue.

What is the extracellular matrix (ECM)?
The extracellular matrix (ECM) is a complex network of proteins and polysaccharides that provides structural support, signaling, and a scaffold for cells. It includes collagen, elastin, and glycosaminoglycans. Is formed outside cells
What is the composition of the extracellular matrix?
The ECM is composed of:
-Fibrous proteins like collagen and elastin
-Proteoglycans
-Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs)
-Glycoproteins such as fibronectin and laminin.
What is the origin of the extracellular matrix?
The ECM is secreted by cells, primarily fibroblasts, in connective tissues. It forms outside the cells and supports tissue architecture and function.
Cillia and flagella are..
Flagella and cilia are extensions of the cell membrane made of microtubules. They help the cell move or move fluids across the cell surface.
How are flagella and cilia different in appearance
Flagella are long with tails while cilia are short and often cover the surface of a cell in large numbers and smack tings around.
Out Of Intermediate filaments, Microfilaments and Microtubeles. Which is going to be more prominent in more permenent structures?
Intermediate filaments
(Because they are the strongest for intergety, but are hardest to breakdown (time and energy))
Are you a dissapointment
No, But you could be if you start scrolling reels again

were some notation u came up with to remember? lol
[Cell junctions]
Tight Junctions (Nothing’s getting through, sealed up tight.)
Gap Junctions (Free flow, no judgment, just sharing.)
Desomoses (No letting go, even under stress.)
Why is collagen important for skin
Collagen gives skin strength, elasticity, and firmness. It helps skin stay smooth and resilient.
Levels of it lower with age
What connects cytoskellon to Extracellular Matrix
Memebrane proteins
What connects Cell to Extracellular Matrix
Fibronectictins
(Look like AliA’s dipiladoculus)
Which component of the cytoskeleton is responsible for muscle contraction
Microfilaments
Help in muscle contraction by interacting with myosin.
Do Intermediate Fillaments in
cytoskeleton help hold organelles in place much?
YES
Intermediate Fillaments
Provide structural stability and anchor organelles.
Which component of the cytoskeleton moves organelles around animal cells
Microtubules
They serve as tracks for motor proteins to move organelles
What component of the cytoskeleton makes up a flagellum
Flagella and Cilia
Which component of the cytoskeleton provides a more rigid structure to the cell
Intermediate filaments provide structural support and resist mechanical stress
