Cytoskeleton Flashcards
What are the functions of the cytoskeleton?
- Supports the cell
- Give the cell its shape
- Controls cell movement
- Holds organelle in place
What is the structure of the cytoskeleton?
- Is a stability of fibres necessary for the shape and stability of the cell
What is the structure of the cilia(and undulipolia)?
- 9 pairs of microbtubules arranged in a cylinder with a pair in the middle (9 + 2) arrangement).
- Each pair has its own tiny motor protein.
What is the function of the cilia(and undulipolia)?
- turn in a corkscrew motion to waft mucus or propelling sperm
What is the structure of centrioles?
- 9 triplets of microtubules arranged in a cylinder.
- A pair is known as a CENTROSOME
What is the function of centrioles?
- produces spindle fibres during cell division
What is the structure of the flagellae?
- a single actin fibres
What is the function of the flagellae?
- moves in a whip-like fashion to propel bacteria.
Where is the location of the micofilaments?
- forming a network around the inside of the cell.
What is the structure of the micofilaments?
- contractile fibres formed from the protein actin
What is the function of the micofilaments?
- cell movement
- cell contraction
- cell division
What is the structure of the microtubules?
- hollow tubes made out of alpha and beta tubulin.
Where is the microtubles located?
- concentrated outside of he cell
What is the Function of the microtubules?
- provides shape of the cell
- cell movement
- cell division
Where are the Intermediate fibres located?
- randomly scattered around the cell.
What is the structure of the intermediate fibres?
- Long strands of protein made from actin.
What is the function of the intermediate fibres?
- fibres give mechanical strength to the cells and help maintain integrity.
