‘owl’s eye’ appearance due to intranuclear inclusion bodies

- growth retardation
- pinpoint petechial ‘blueberry muffin’ skin lesions
- microcephaly
- sensorineural deafness
- encephalitiis (seizures)
- hepatosplenomegaly

A
- infectious mononucleosis-like illness
- may develop in immunocompetent individuals

CMV retinitis
A
- common in HIV with low CD4
- ‘blurred vision’
- fundoscopy = retinal haemorrhages and necrosis (called ‘pizza’ retina)
- IV ganciclovir is treatment of choice
