Cytokines Flashcards
What does G-CSF stand for?
Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor
What cells make Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF)?
Basic tissue cell- Fibroblasts
What is the function of the Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF)?
Stimulates production of neutrophils and their release into the blood
What does IFNa stand for?
Interferon alpha
What cells make interferon-alpha (IFNa)?
Infected cells-usually virus
What is the function of interferon-alpha (IFNa)?
Increases anti-viral responses
Increases MCH1 levels on cells
Causes autocrine release of IFNb
What does IFNb stand for?
Interferon beta
What cells make Interferon-beta (IFNb)?
Infected cells -usually virus
What is the function of Interferon-beta (IFNb)?
Increases anti-viral responses
Increases MHC1 levels on cells
What does INFy stand for?
Interferon gamma
What cells make Interferon-gamma (IFNy)?
T cells (particulary T helper type 1)
NK cells
Intraepithelial lymphocytes in MALTs
What is the function of Interferon-gamma (IFNy)?
Activates macrophages
Increases antigen presentation on MHC2
Induces class switching of B cells
Suppresses T helper 2 (Th2) and T helper 17 (Th17) cells
What does IL stand for?
Interleukin
What cells make Interleukin 1 beta (IL-1b)?
Macrophages and epithelial cells
What is the function of Interleukin 1 beta (IL-1b)?
Proinflammatory : fever, activation of vascular endothelium to allow immune cells into tissue, T cell activation, macrophage activation
What cells make Interleukin 2 (IL-2)?
T cells
What is the function of Interleukin 2 (IL-2)?
T cell growth factor- promotes T cell proliferation and effector function
What cells make Interleukin 4 (IL-4)?
Antigen presenting cells
T helper 2 cells (Th2)
