Cytokines Flashcards
IL-2
Powerful T cell growth factor (induces proliferation of activated specific T cell population)
Produced by TH1 CD4+ T cells (can act in autocrine manner)
IL-1
Partially mediates acute phase inflammatory response by recruiting inflammatory cells and initiating fever
Produced by APC
Promotes TH17
IL-4
Induces synthesis of different type of antibody (IgE) from B cells
Produced by TH2 CD4+ T cells (TH2 pathway)
IL-5
Activation of eosinophils
Produced by TH2 CD4+ T cells
IL-6
Promote acute phase inflammatory response
Promote TH17 pathway
IL-7
Produced in bone marrow by stromal cells
Promotes maturation of nearby B cell progenitor cells (paracrine)
IL-8
Mast cell activator
Derived from macrophage
IL-10
Inhibitory cytokine released by regulatory T cells (CD4+ T cells with CD25)
IL-12
Promotes TH1 pathway
Produced by APC (usually macrophage in TH1 pathway) on initial antigen presentation
Secretion from macrophages induced by IFN-gamma
IL-13
Promotes IgE production (type 1 hypersensitivity)
IL-15
Activates NK cells
IL-17
Secreted by TH17 CD4+ T cells
Promotes TH17 pathway (recruit neutrophils/monocytes)
IL-23
Secreted by APC
Promotes TH17 pathway
TNF
Acute phase inflammatory response
Acts on/activates neutrophils/endothelial cells
IFN-gamma
Activates macrophages, augments phagocytosis and killing of microbes, increase class II expression for more antigen presentation, induces secretion of IL-12
Mediates DTH
Released from TH1 CD4+ T cells (paracrine)
