Cysts of the Oral Cavity Flashcards
Primordial Cyst
oval or round well-circumscribed unilocular or (rarely) multilocular radiolucency with sclerotic border; mildy expansile and is of variable size
Dentigerous Cyst (Follicular Cyst)
smooth bordered, usually unilocular or sometimes multilocular radiolucency located around the tooth circumferentially, laterally, or in a “doughnut” ring; size varies from small to extremely large and extending into the ramus
Eruption Cyst (Eruption Hematoma)
well-circumscribed unilocular translucency around crown of erupting tooth
Odontogenic Keratocyst (OKC)
unilocular or multilocular radiolucency with well-defined smooth or scalloped borders, sometimes associated with impacted teeth (especially 3rd molars), also seen in edentulous areas
Lateral Periodontal Cyst
small, well-circumscribed, unilocular radiolucency at lateral of involved tooth
Botryoid Odontogenic Cyst
multilocular lateral periodontal cyst; well-circumscribed, unilocular radiolucency at lateral of involved tooth
Calcifying Odontogenic Cyst (Gorlin Cyst)
well-circumscribed radiolucency with flecks or masses of radiopaque material (size and amount varies)
Nasopalatine Duct Cyst (Incisive Canal Cyst)
usually bilateral, well-circumscribed, round, ovoid, or heart-shaped radiolucency; may diverge roots of central incisor
Globulomaxillary Cyst
inverted pear-shaped radiolucency between roots of the lateral incisor and cuspid teeth, causing divergence; bilateral lesions reported
Solitary Bone Cyst (Traumatic Bone Cyst/Cavity, Hemorrhagic Cyst)
well-circumscribed radiolucency with sclerotic (sometimes) but usually well-fined border and scalloped appearance squeezing between roots of teeth; usually lies above mandibular canal when in posterior mandible and below teeth in anterior mandible (mistaken for radicular cyst)
Focal Osteoporotic Bone-Marrow Defect
ill-defined radiolucency of variable size
Salivary Gland Depression (Static Bone Cyst)
ovoid, well-defined radiolucency
