Cysts of the Jaw Flashcards
What is a cyst?
Pathological fluid fuelled cavity lined by epithelium
What are the two types of cyst in the jaw?
Odontogenic and non-odontogenic
What is an odontogenic cyst?
Cyst lined w/ odontogenic epithelium arising from dental lamina which originates from proliferation of rests of malassez
Where do odontogenic cysts affect?
Only tooth bearing regions
What is a non-odontogenic cyst?
Cyst lined by non-odontogenic epithelium usually developmental in origin
What are common features of cysts?
Sharply defined radiolucency w/ smooth border
Slow growing, displace rather than resorb teeth
What would aspiration of cyst show?
Fluid consent - exclude solid lesion
Are cysts symptomatic?
Usually symptomless unless infected
What type of cyst is a radicular cyst?
Odontogenic and inflammatory
What is a radicular cyst?
A cyst on the apex of a non-vital tooth
Most common people for radicular cyst to affect?
20-60yrs
Males> females
What are are most common for radicular cyst?
Maxilla > mandible
What will you see radiographically on radicular cyst?
Rounded and sharply defined radiolucency associated w/ apex of root
Non-vital tooth from which cyst originated from will be evident
What is a residual cyst?
Radicular cyst which remain after causative tooth has been removed
Treatment of radicular cyst?
Enulceation - will not recur
What is a lateral radicular cyst?
Radicular cyst that forms at side of non-vital tooth - at opening lateral branch of root canal
Problem w/ lateral radicular cyst?
Need to be differentiated from periodontal cyst
What is a residual radicular cyst?
Radicular cyst that has persisted after causative tooth has been extracted?
What are the features of a residual cyst?
Same as radicular cyst
What types of cyst is a dentigerous cyst?
Odontogenic cyst
What is a dentigerous cyst?
A cyst that forms around the crown of an unerupted tooth w/ epithelium lining attached CEJ
How do dentigerous cyst occur?
Follicular expansion due to separation of the reduced enamel epithelium and then enamel
How do dentigerous cyst prevent the tooth from erupting?
The cyst wall is attached to the neck of the tooth preventing eruption
What can dentigerous cyst cause?
Displacement of teeth
